'What you get with a Jean Grainger book is warm, authentic writing that welcomes you into the heart of Ireland'
Kate Kerrigan, New York Times bestselling author of the Ellis Island trilogy.

Carmel is lost. Sharif is searching. Neither knows the full truth.

Carmel Sheehan was abandoned as a baby and left in the care of an Irish convent. Though they were not cruel, life with the nuns was lonely and isolating. Nobody ever adopted her, so when the time came to leave Trinity House, she was terrified, and jumped at the chance to get a family of her own through a marriage to man she barely knew.

But Bill wasn’t who he seemed, and having his horrible sister Julia as a constant looming presence made a bad situation even worse.

Then a Facebook message from a man claiming to know more about her past than she knew herself changed everything. What would make the nuns at Trinity House lie about her history? Could Carmel risk the only life she’s known to find out?

What reviews are saying

'I love Carmel, she's warm and funny and you find yourself rooting for her every step of the way. I don't do misery, and this book is not like those sad Irish childhood books, it's uplifting and intriguing with characters you really care about and a plot that twists and turns in all sorts of ways.'

'I cried, and I laughed, Carmel is a modern heroine, flawed and damaged but resilient and strong.'

'Move over Maeve Binchy, Jean's writing has those elements Maeve had, warmth, fun with an poignant edge, I enjoyed the whole series.'

Letters of Freedom The Carmel Sheehan Series Book 1 A Novella edition by Jean Grainger Romance eBooks

I have enjoyed reading each of Jean Grainger novels incuding this short story but finished it wishing it was longer. What it lacks in complexity of plot, it makes up for in depth of human interest. It is a snippet of life.

Carmel Sheahan was an orphan, short-changed of love and opportunity in childhood, and then deprived of connubial love in her marriage. Must she always be put down, and remiinded of her flaws? Her lot was one of emotional abuse to be endlessly endured, when she had a right to expect more in their solemn exchange of vows.

A window of opportunity presents for Carmel. She does not hesitate. She seizes the day.

Letters of Freedom The Carmel Sheehan Series Book 1 A Novella edition by Jean Grainger Romance eBooks Reviews

I could not put this book down, it was past my bedtime and I wanted to keep reading. Jean Grainger makes her characters come alive and and I felt like I was right there in the action! She is on my list of favorite authors.
Jean Grainer you are an amazing author. Please keep writing. If you would finish this story for me I would be eternally grateful. I love to read because I have no imagination of my own. I need you to tell me why Carmel's husband was so heartbroken, why his sister was so angry. Why she was never adopted and what happened when she ran away with her wonderful Dr.
Another heartwarming book from Jean Grainger, my favorite fictional author with an Ireland background. Carmel was placed in an orphanage. She left as a young adult to marry a man with twin daughters. She was never loved or accepted. The letters she received offered Her a chance to really live. I've re-read this book and am anxiously awaiting the sequel.
Jean Grainger does it again! Another delightful and heartfelt tale with believable characters, set in Ireland. Although this story was a short one, it still managed to convey real depth of feeling through Carmel, the main character. Her life changes in a most unexpected way, once she receives letters from her mother, which were written to Carmel on each of her birthdays.
I enjoyed this short story about hope. Tis a hard role, the role of the unloved, so why not grasp the chance for love when it comes? That is just what Carmel wants to do, after hearing the sad story of her birth mother. Must get the next book to find out if it works out for her.
A well crafted story about Carmel Sheehan's difficult life in an Ireland Orphanage. She leaves the orphanage as a young woman to marry a widower who is looking for help in raising his twins. She leads a life with little love or warm but as the story develops she does find happiness and love. Jean Grainger is a wonderful story teller and highly recommend this book.
In a full-length book, it is normal to fully develop characters, plot, and ending. To do this so thoroughly in a short novella is a true skill, one this author mastered beautifully. The ending could have gone either way, as the main character was faced with an immediate and life-changing decision; in my opinion, she made the right choice.
